at the age of 74 I was admitted into the Master’s programme at University of Gloucestershire, U.K. to pursue a graduate degree in Creative & Critical Writing. Fact is, the ‘Critical’ component is both very important and quite rare in graduate writing programmes. A key component in the coursework, and in the learning modules, is coming to understand how to become a ‘critical thinker’, in regards to writing, authorship and its constituent responsibilities. ‘Tis not, simply about, being a creative bloke.
The experience of the course, the firm guidance of Dr. Duncan Dicks, Senior Lecturer in the programme, provided me with a solid understanding of writing, of creative writing.
In my current activities and membership in a number of local writing groups, I find I am able to quite quickly, identify and flag, the dross in a written piece. And in so doing, am able to provide helpful insights to the author – guidances in regards to making statements leaner, more powerful.
It is, as a part of my Wishlist, at my age, the desire to seek admission to a Ph.D. programme – somewhere – in Creative Writing. And you may well ask, ‘Whyever would you want to do that?’.
Fair question. Simple answer is, I am, a teacher – and I am a very good teacher as I have discovered after devoting significant time/energy to that pursuit, over the last 25 years.
. . .and so – this is not your normal ‘about’…….but it is, about
me
